The team directed by Elżbieta Senkus-Konefka, MD, PhD, from the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Coordinator of the Breast Unit at the University Clinical Centre in Gdańsk, is involved in research on breast cancer, which is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women.
The Centre is conducting a clinical trial of targeted treatment in triple-negative breast cancer. The trial will evaluate the biological effect of the applied therapy at the tissue level and at the functional level.
Established in 2018, the Centre is fully capable of comprehensively managing patients from the time a tumour is detected in the breast, through the entire complex cancer treatment and during post-treatment follow-up. The patients have access to modern diagnostic methods – including vacuum-assisted biopsy, magnetic resonance mammography and isotope testing. Specialists employed at the Centre are involved in the development of national and international standards of treatment for this type of cancer.
Patients with established diagnosis of malignant tumor are cared for by a Multidisciplinary Team that consists of a surgical oncologist, a clinical oncologist, a radiation oncologist and diagnosticians: a radiologist and a pathologist. The patients during treatment are supported by specialized breast nurses. The treatment is complemented by psychologist and nutritionist counselling. The Centre also has the advantage of the presence of a rehamanager who supports patients and their families in solving non-medical problems related to cancer.
